# Automations

> Use connected entities in a simple Home Assistant automation.

An automation runs an action when something happens. You can use the same entities you see in HA Link.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Automations">
    Go to **Settings → Automations & scenes**. Select **Create automation → Create new automation**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose when it runs">
    Add a trigger under **When**, such as a time or a supported entity changing state. Start with one simple trigger.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose what happens">
    Under **Then do**, add an action supported by your entity. For example, choose a light's turn-on action and select that light as the target.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the automation">
    Select **Save** and give it a clear name. Leave it enabled so Home Assistant can respond to its trigger.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check it works">
    Cause the trigger to happen and check the device's response. Open the automation's trace if you need to see which steps ran.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Check>Your connected entity can now take part in Home Assistant automations.</Check>

<Note>Some entities only report a reading. Use those as triggers or conditions, and choose a controllable entity for an action.</Note>
