# Matter devices

> Add a Matter accessory or share one from another home app.

Matter lets compatible devices connect to Home Assistant, including devices already used in another home app.

  <Step title="Open the Matter card">
    In **HA Link**, find **Matter devices**. Select **Set up**; on Home Assistant OS, accept the default Matter Server setup. **Manage devices** opens an existing connection.

  <Step title="Prepare your phone">
    Open the current Home Assistant Companion app and enable Bluetooth. Thread accessories also need a working Thread border router.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a device">
    In the Companion app, open **Settings → Connectivity → Matter → Add device**. Choose whether the device is new or already in use.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow the pairing prompts">
    For a new device, scan its setup code. For a shared device, follow the prompts to generate a fresh sharing code in its current home app.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Finish and refresh">
    Complete pairing, name the device, and choose an area. Return to **HA Link**, select the refresh icon at the top (**Refresh connections**), and open the device's entities.
